According to BBC News, at least 12 people were killed and 17 injured, including two children, in overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the wider region. Local officials reported that civilian infrastructure and residential buildings were hit.

In Kyiv, six of the eight people killed were railway workers employed by the state Ukrzaliznytsia company. They died after a depot was struck. Four other people were killed in the town of Boryspil, according to the report.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attacks caused fires in three districts of Kyiv. The strikes hit the capital and the surrounding region, with officials reporting casualties and damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

Russia’s defence ministry said its “massive strike using high-precision weapons” had targeted Ukraine’s “military-industrial and fuel-energy” facilities in Kyiv and the region. The attack followed Russian strikes on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region on Friday that killed 38 people and caused shells, mines and drones to detonate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The latest reported strikes add to the continuing toll of the war on Kyiv, its wider region and civilian sites.
