According to The Guardian, independent MP Monique Ryan has criticised the Albanese government after Labor struggled during a sitting week to pass a budget-saving measure that would reduce private health insurance rebates for people over 65.
Ryan, the member for Kooyong, was a vocal critic of the proposed bill. Speaking with the political editor, Tom McIlroy, on the Australian Politics podcast, she argued that the government was continually on the “back foot”.
The government has significant unfinished business as the end of the political year approaches, the report said. Ryan was also critical of the way Labor had brought a number of key proposals to parliament, in the context of the difficulties surrounding the health insurance rebate measure.
The podcast also addressed speculation about a possible return to Canberra by Josh Frydenberg, Ryan’s former political rival in Kooyong and treasurer in the Morrison government. The discussion followed the launch of Frydenberg’s memoir during the week.
