According to ABC News, SA Health says nine staff members are now part of an ongoing investigation into potential inappropriate access to the private patient records of former Adelaide Crows player Tony Modra.

SA Health said one additional staff member was under investigation following an audit that identified eight staff members who remain under investigation. Last month, the department said three staff were being investigated and another five employees were being assessed to determine whether their access had always been appropriate.

Modra was seriously injured in a truck crash at Back Valley, near Victor Harbor on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, in June. He later underwent facial surgery. SA Health has previously apologised to Modra’s family.

The department has said it regularly conducts audits to ensure staff access appropriate information. It has previously said employees who access information inappropriately may face disciplinary processes, including possible termination of employment.

The case follows earlier concerns over access to records involving high-profile people. In 2016, 13 hospital staff were sanctioned over access to Cy Walsh’s medical records. In 2024, an SA Health investigation found 18 staff had engaged in misconduct or inappropriately accessed records of a patient understood to be Charlie Stevens. Modra recently said on social media that he was getting out and about and praised medical staff involved in his recovery.
