According to ABC News, one SA Health employee has been reprimanded for accessing the private medical records of AFL legend Tony Modra after he was seriously injured in a truck crash. SA Health said two other employees remain under investigation.
The department said the number of employees being investigated for potentially inappropriate access had been revised from nine to three. Of those three, one person has been reprimanded and two investigations continue. Six people are no longer under investigation, SA Health said, adding that any sanction becomes part of an employee’s permanent record.
In July, SA Health said nine staff members were either being investigated over alleged inappropriate access or assessed to determine whether their access had always been appropriate. The department also apologised to Modra’s family at that time for any distress caused.
Modra underwent facial surgery and spent days in hospital after a truck crash at Back Valley, near Victor Harbor on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, on June 18. He later shared Instagram photos from intensive care and while recovering with family, saying in a July update that he was able to get “out and about”.
The case follows earlier concerns about inappropriate access to SA Health patient records involving well-known people. In 2016, 13 hospital staff were sanctioned over access to Cy Walsh’s records. In 2024, an SA Health investigation found 18 staff had engaged in misconduct or inappropriately accessed records of a patient understood to be Charlie Stevens. SA Health has previously said it regularly conducts audits to ensure staff access appropriate information.
