Arabic version: تينور ساموا بيني باتي يتألق على أكبر مسارح الأوبرا العالمية
Pene Pati, a Samoan tenor, has emerged as a prominent figure in the world of opera, captivating audiences on the most prestigious stages including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Royal Albert Hall. Born on the impoverished island of Upolu, Pati’s journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim is chronicled in a new documentary titled ‘Tenor: My Name is Pati’, which premieres this weekend at the Sydney Film Festival. According to The Guardian, Pati’s voice is described as rich and expressive, often evoking the warmth of the Pacific.
Pati’s success story is not without its challenges. He faced skepticism early in his career, with mentors telling him that island boys do not sing opera. Despite this, Pati persevered, driven by a desire to prove his critics wrong. He recalls the emotional struggles he faced, stating, “It did hurt a lot of times when people said ‘this is not for you.'” His determination has led him to a fully booked schedule until 2029.
The documentary highlights Pati’s emotional connection to his music, with fellow artists praising his talent. South African soprano Golda Schultz referred to him as “a beast of talent,” while conductor Marc Minkowski likened him to a rebirth of the legendary Luciano Pavarotti. Pati believes that the emotion he conveys in his performances resonates deeply with audiences, allowing them to feel the pain and love he expresses on stage.
Pati’s upbringing in New Zealand, where his family moved for better opportunities, shaped his musical journey. He fondly recalls singing with his siblings at a local retirement home, where they performed for residents every week. Despite financial struggles, Pati maintains that he did not feel poor, as the shared experience of hardship fostered a sense of community.
As Pati continues to rise in the opera world, he remains grounded, attributing his success to the support of his family and the cultural values instilled in him. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists, demonstrating that with perseverance and passion, one can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness in their chosen field.
