According to BBC News, Ben Sandilands won gold and Steven Bryce took bronze for Scotland in the men’s T20 1500m on the opening day of Commonwealth Games athletics at Scotstoun.

Sandilands completed a fast final lap to win in 3:57.20, while Bryce held on for third place behind Canada’s Michael Barber. Their medals gave the Scottish crowd new home heroes after Eilish McColgan withdrew because she had not recovered from a foot injury.

Megan Keith was Scotland’s only entrant in the women’s 10,000m following McColgan’s withdrawal. The Inverness runner finished ninth in 32:22.11.

Canada’s Olympic hammer champion Ethan Katzberg set a Commonwealth record with an 80.97m throw. Scotland’s Chris Bennett finished fifth with 69.48m in his fourth and final Games, ending a 24-year career. Alexander Thomson was ninth in the T38 100m final after returning from knee surgery.

Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace reached the 800m semi-finals, while Mena Scatchard missed qualification by 0.06 seconds. Stephen Mackenzie advanced to the men’s long jump final with a 7.75m leap, and Angela McAuslan-Kelly reached the women’s hammer final after throwing 60.59m.
