Scott Mills has confirmed that he was investigated by police regarding a sexual offence, marking his first statement since being sacked from the BBC over allegations relating to his personal conduct. In his statement, Mills noted that the announcement of his sacking had led to widespread rumour and speculation.

The Metropolitan Police initiated an investigation in 2016, which concluded in 2019 when the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges. Mills stated, “Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years… I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter,” according to BBC News.

The allegations against Mills reportedly occurred between 1997 and 2000, when he would have been in his mid-twenties. The BBC confirmed on Monday that Mills was dismissed due to “new information” about his conduct that emerged in recent weeks, despite being aware of the police investigation since 2017.

Mills expressed gratitude towards those who supported him during this time, including former colleagues and listeners, stating, “I greatly miss” them. The BBC has not disclosed additional details regarding the allegations or the specifics of the new information that prompted Mills’ sacking.
