According to BBC News, Sean McCann has qualified for Saturday’s 400m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games after finishing fourth in his morning heat in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, reached the final as the eighth and last qualifier at his first major championships. With parents Kate and Gerry watching from the stands, McCann recorded three minutes 52.65 seconds, four seconds behind the pace set by Australia’s Sam Short.

“I am buzzing,” McCann said. “It wasn’t really an expectation coming in given how strong the field was but delighted to see I have made it.” He said the home support at Tollcross Swimming Centre helped spur him on during the final 100m.

McCann grew up in England and qualifies for Scotland through his father. A chemical engineering student at Loughborough University, where he trains, he will also race in the 800m and 1500m freestyle later in the meet.

The 400m final at 19:07 BST will feature Short, Northern Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen, defending champion Elijah Winnington, James Guy and Jack McMillan. McCann said competing for Scotland is a stepping stone towards his ultimate goal of reaching the Olympics.
