According to ABC News, more than a dozen locations in South Australia recorded their hottest September day as temperatures rose 10 to 15 degrees Celsius above average in some areas. Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said hot, dry and gusty northerly winds spreading across the state drove the burst of heat.

Mr Narramore said conditions felt more like January than September. While temperatures at this time of year are normally in the high teens to low 20s, many areas reached the mid to high 30s. Adelaide recorded 34.4C at 1:36pm, its second hottest September day on record. The city’s highest September temperature remains 35.1C, observed at West Terrace in 1961.

September records were broken at Port Pirie, Kadina, Clare, Minlaton, Edithburgh, Parawa, Murray Bridge, Mount Lofty, Roseworthy, Edinburgh, Parafield, Noarlunga, Hindmarsh Island and Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island. Port Augusta was the state’s hottest location, reaching 37.9C at 1:42pm, although it did not set a September record.

A cool change was expected to move across most of South Australia overnight and the following day, bringing temperatures back to the low 20s and cooler conditions later in the week. Widespread cloud, showers and possible thunderstorms were also forecast for southern parts of the state on Thursday and Friday. At Glenelg, Chloe Moore went to the beach with sandcastles to keep cool, while Soula George said air-conditioned shops and homes helped people cope with the heat.
