September Jobs Growth Misses Forecast as Unemployment Rises

According to Cnbc, U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by a seasonally adjusted 29,000 in September, below the 84,000 forecast in a Dow Jones survey. The unemployment rate increased to 4.2%, compared with expectations for 4.1%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

The August jobs figure was revised down to a gain of 133,000, while July was revised from a gain to a loss of 10,000 jobs. Together, the revisions showed 60,000 fewer jobs than previously reported.

Household employment increased by 406,000, while the labor force expanded by 485,000. The labor-force participation rate rose 0.2 percentage point to 61.8%, its highest level since May. An alternative unemployment measure, including discouraged workers and people working part time for economic reasons, edged down to 7.6%, the lowest since January 2025.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% in September, leaving the 12-month increase at 3%, the lowest annual level since May 2021. The average work week was unchanged at 34.6 hours. Health care added 17,000 jobs, construction gained 11,000 and manufacturing added 9,000. Government employment fell by 17,000, while temporary help services, information services and financial activities also declined.

Stock futures rose and Treasury yields fell after the report. Market-implied odds of the Federal Reserve holding rates steady at its Oct. 27-28 meeting rose to 82.8%, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The Federal Open Market Committee raised benchmark rates by a quarter percentage point in September.
