Lionsgate has confirmed plans for a sequel to its hit Michael Jackson biopic, despite the controversies that surrounded the original film. During a quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson stated that preparations for the sequel are progressing exceptionally well.
According to The Guardian, Fogelson expressed confidence in the sequel’s potential, highlighting that a significant amount of Jackson’s story remains untold. He emphasized that the sequel could explore many of the most popular aspects of Jackson’s music catalogue that were not covered in the first film.
The original biopic, titled “Michael,” achieved remarkable success, earning $715.8 million worldwide since its release in April. The film concluded with Jackson’s iconic performance at Wembley Stadium in 1988, part of his Bad tour. However, the production faced challenges due to allegations of child sex abuse against Jackson, leading to the exclusion of certain footage from the final cut.
Fogelson indicated that the sequel might not follow a chronological narrative, suggesting the possibility of exploring events both before and after the timeframe of the original film. He also mentioned that there is 25 to 30% of a second movie already shot from the prior production activity, which could help manage production costs effectively.
