According to Allafrica, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, renewed the country’s call for the UN Security Council to designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as a terrorist organization.
Speaking to the Security Council in New York on Monday evening, Idris said the nature of the RSF’s attacks had changed following military setbacks. He cited the group’s removal from Khartoum in March 2025, the loss of the road linking Omdurman and El-Obeid in July 2026, and its retreat to West Darfur in early August 2026.
Idris said the militia had moved away from direct combat and increased long-range drone strikes, which he said were intended to kill civilians and make life impossible in areas outside its control. He said drone strikes in Kordofan had killed more than 1,000 people since the start of 2026.
The envoy also said the RSF had repeatedly targeted World Food Programme convoys, including a humanitarian convoy travelling to Kadugli and Dilling in South Kordofan since February 2026. He cited attacks on the El-Obeid-Kosti road that targeted aid trucks and fuel tankers and killed displaced people fleeing areas under militia control.
Idris said that on August 12 the RSF carried out its largest coordinated drone assault in months, targeting Khartoum, El-Obeid, Atbara and Damazin. An electrical transformer exploded in Khartoum Bahri, disrupting daily life for about 500,000 residents. He also cited earlier attacks on Port Sudan, Khartoum International Airport, a Blue Nile State power station and a UN logistics base in Kadugli, where six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed in December 2025.
