Arabic version: شيرر يراقب سعي هالاند إلى تحطيم رقم الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز
According to BBC News, Alan Shearer is enjoying his status as the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer while recognising that Erling Haaland, or another player, could eventually break his record. Shearer scored 260 league goals during 14 years in the competition, while Manchester City forward Haaland has reached 120 in four-and-a-bit seasons.
Shearer said he would enjoy the record while it lasts, joking that a move for Haaland to Real Madrid or elsewhere in the next couple of years would help preserve it. Before Haaland, Harry Kane had been closing in on the total, but his Premier League tally stopped at 213 when he left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in 2023.
Twenty years after retiring, the former Newcastle United and England striker reflected on his connection to Newcastle in an interview with Kelly Somers. Shearer left home at 15 to join Southampton, living in digs with another family, before moving closer to home in 1992 to work with Sir Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn Rovers. He won the Premier League there before returning to Newcastle in 1996.
Shearer spent 10 years at his boyhood club, scoring 206 goals in 405 appearances in all competitions. He recalled watching Kevin Keegan from the Gallowgate End at St James’ Park as a child, then later signing for Newcastle when Keegan was manager. When he walks to the ground as a fan after meeting friends at a pub, Shearer said he wears a cap and rarely looks up to avoid delays.
After his playing career, Shearer was Newcastle’s interim manager for the final eight games of the 2009 season, when the club was relegated. He later had interviews and was offered the Cardiff job, but decided against continuing in management. He instead returned to punditry and is now a regular on Match of the Day, co-commentates on England games and appears on The Rest Is Football podcast.
