According to ABC News, Australia finished the opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay at 8-165, holding a 101-run lead after an extraordinary 18-wicket day. Cameron Green was unbeaten on 51, with Nathan Lyon on 10, after Bangladesh fought back from being dismissed for 64.

Mitchell Starc dominated the morning for Australia, taking 6-12 after Bangladesh lost the toss and batted. Starc struck with the first ball of his spell and claimed five wickets in a six-over burst that returned figures of 5-5. Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das were dismissed for ducks, while Mominul Haque made 9. Pat Cummins took 3-25 and Josh Hazlewood 1-18. Shoriful Islam, Bangladesh’s number 11, top-scored with 14.

Australia’s reply began unevenly. Matt Renshaw was caught at slip for 8, while Travis Head made 22 before falling to Shoriful’s second ball of the match. In the same over, Marnus Labuschagne was bowled off his thigh pad for 4. Steve Smith and Green then built a 77-run partnership, but Smith was given out lbw to Shoriful for 42 after the on-field decision was retained on review.

Shoriful, playing his first Test in Australia, then dismantled the lower order to finish with 6-35. Alex Carey, in his 50th Test, made 5 before being caught in the deep. Beau Webster was dismissed lbw for a first-ball duck, Cummins fell for a second-ball duck and Starc was bowled for 1. The 18 wickets were the third most to fall in a day of Test cricket in Australia since 1975. Play is scheduled to resume at 10:00am AEST.
