Police in southern Tasmania are hunting for a person who fired at officers as they were driving to an alleged family violence incident.

Shots were fired at one police car containing two officers about 11.50pm on Monday as they travelled to arrest a person at Glenfern, about 35km northwest of Hobart.

Shortly afterwards, shots were also fired from a dark coloured 4WD at a second police car containing one officer on the way to the scene.

No one was injured but one of the vehicles was shot “a number of times”, Tasmania Police said in a statement.

Police are searching for the alleged offender at New Norfolk and Bridgewater, north of Hobart.

Police Association of Tasmania president Colin Riley said the officers were lucky to escape injury.

“Everything can be quiet and all of a sudden it goes chaotic – that is the nature of policing,” he said.
