Former NSW Liberal minister John Sidoti says allegations of misconduct have ruined his career and he will fight a single criminal charge alleging he tried to unduly influence councillors over planning outcomes that would have favoured his family’s property interests.
According to ABC News, the charge stems from an Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry that in 2022 found Mr Sidoti engaged in serious corrupt conduct and recommended the Director of Public Prosecutions consider criminal charges. Mr Sidoti called the impacts of the allegations “disgraceful” and “horrible”, saying they ruined his political career, his parents’ health and his children’s lives.
In Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court the Crown sought bail conditions including a prohibition on contacting potential witnesses, but Mr Sidoti’s barrister, Daniel Grippi, successfully resisted that change. Mr Grippi told the court the case appeared to be based on “a few emails” and in-person conversations and described the Crown case as weak. The prosecutor said the matter had moved from an ICAC inquiry to a criminal prosecution and handed up a lengthy draft Crown case statement. Judge Hugh Donnelly rejected the Crown’s application and adjourned the matter until September.
Why this matters: the ICAC finding that Mr Sidoti lobbied City of Canada Bay councillors to relax planning controls for three family-owned properties in Five Dock led to the DPP being asked to consider charges. That progression from an anti-corruption inquiry to a criminal case touches on the integrity of planning decisions and the legal accountability of former public officeholders, and the proceedings have had personal consequences for those involved.
Mr Sidoti said outside court he had always maintained his innocence, that “the presumption of innocence and the rule of law” should apply, and that he would not accept bail restrictions — “I’ve had five years to do a runner. I’m not going anywhere.” What happens next: the case has been adjourned to September for further steps in the prosecution process.
