According to Cnbc, 1.7 million skilled trade jobs are expected to open each year through 2035, citing the State of America’s Skilled Trades report published Wednesday. Jobs for the Future and The Burning Glass Institute led the research.
The report projects more than 600,000 net new skilled-trade jobs through the end of 2035. Electricians, plumbers, maintenance workers and carpenters are among occupations facing demand, with infrastructure needs identified as a major driver of job creation.
Matt Sigelman, president of The Burning Glass Institute, said large infrastructure projects, including AI data centers, and growth in parts of the country requiring housing, commercial construction and power-grid expansion are stimulating employment. Nearly a quarter of workers across the report’s 124 job titles are 55 or older, while workers under 25 represent 11% of the workforce.
“One in 12 trade jobs needs to be replaced in just the next five years,” Sigelman said. He said the sector must both fill new positions and replace retirees.
An Ad Council Research Institute study found that 33% of students said they would feel respected working in trades, compared with 50% for healthcare. Only 9% of teens considered trades for post-graduate careers, while 56% considered higher education. Still, 71% said they would be proud to attend trade school, and 81% of parents said they would be proud of a teen pursuing a skilled-trades career.
The report also highlighted retention challenges. Just below half of people entering through postsecondary programs or registered apprenticeships complete those programs; five years later, 29% of apprenticeship participants and 34% of postsecondary participants remain in the trades.
