According to ABC News, 11 South Australian venues have become the first restaurants in Australia to receive Michelin Guide stars. At a red-carpet ceremony at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Wednesday evening, 10 venues received one star and Magill Estate Restaurant received the nation’s sole two-star rating.
The one-star recipients were Anvers Restaurant, Maxwell Restaurant, Botanic, Arkhé, Esmay, Aurora at ILA, Hentley Farm, LVN Restaurant at Bird In Hand, Aptos and Skillogalee Barrel House. Magill Estate Restaurant, which overlooks Penfolds winery, earned two stars. The recognised venues are located across premium produce districts including McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa Valley.
Michelin Guide international director Gwendal Poullennec described the awards as an historic milestone, saying it was the first time the guide had recognised restaurants in Australia. Magill Estate Restaurant chef Scott Huggins said the result was a “dream that’s come true” and that he felt lucky and honoured to lead the first Australian restaurant to achieve two stars.
Dozens of other venues and chefs were also recognised, including Shobosho chef Shakaan Abillion, who won the inaugural young chef award. SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said 77 venues had been recognised by Michelin. The guide entered a commercial agreement with the SA government, which said the price it paid was confidential for commercial reasons. Australian food industry advocate Mandy Hall said receiving a Michelin star was “life-changing.”
