South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Hon. Michael Makuei, has firmly denied accusations made by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) regarding the alleged movement restrictions imposed on their leader, Dr. Riek Machar. During a session with stakeholders at the RJMEC, Makuei, who also serves as the government spokesperson, refuted claims that the government was hindering Machar’s political activities. He emphasized that Machar, like any other presidential candidate, is free to campaign and engage with his supporters, especially with the elections approaching in a few months. Makuei highlighted that all political parties, in line with the roadmap, are permitted to campaign. He pointed out the ongoing complaints within the city from the SPLM-IG and stressed the importance of adhering to the revitalized peace agreement for conducting elections, despite the SPLM-IO’s concerns over the limited time and their contentious debates favoring a postponement of the elections.
