David Reath Malual, an SPM IO General who passed away on March 6th in Juba, held a significant role in the transitional Government of National Unity as a Presidential adviser. His position was one of the most prominent in the government. General Reath played a crucial part in the 2018 peace agreement, signed in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. This agreement brought hope and stability to the youngest nation in Africa, despite numerous deadlocks and political standoffs over the distribution of ministerial positions.
Recently, President Kiir and Dr. Machar found themselves in a political dispute following the removal of the country’s first female defense minister, Mama Teny. The situation is still unresolved, but both leaders have pledged to continue discussions to reach a resolution.
During the funeral ceremony, SPM IO Chairman Dr. Riek Machar, who also serves as Vice President in the transitional Government of National Unity, honored the late General Reath as a hero and peacemaker whose legacy would be eternally remembered.
Reath, an elder from the Lou Nuer community in Eastern Nuer territories, leaves behind an unclear cause of death. Many Nuer elders regard him as a man of his word. Government officials have also expressed their grief, acknowledging Reath’s passing as a great loss to the nation.
