The Presidential Affairs Minister, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, confirmed that the two leaders had engaged in discussions on a wide range of issues during their meeting. However, the main focus was on resolving a deadlock and addressing outstanding pending key points. Dr. Benjamin stated that the leaders agreed to continue talks as necessary to improve the implementation of the peace process.
In a historic meeting, the South Sudanese heads of the transitional government convened for the first time since President Kiir removed Angelina Teny from the defense ministry without involving Machar’s faction. This move caused controversy as Machar’s faction was responsible for the appointment of the country’s first female defense minister. Instead, President Kiir’s side took over the ministry in what appeared to be an attempt to control the military institution.
During the meeting, the former Jonglei State Speaker, Hon. Ameer Ateny, who had been removed from her position several months ago by decree, was present. This face-to-face meeting was attended by high-ranking government officials who witnessed this historic moment.
