South Sudan’s first Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, and Dr. Floribert Ngorako, the World Bank’s Executive Director for Constituency Countries of East Africa and West Africa region, engaged in a productive discussion centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, Dr. Riek Machar, as South Sudan’s first Vice President, emphasized the pressing need for developmental assistance to address the country’s economic challenges and support its refugee population. He underscored the importance of providing clean water, energy, and well-constructed roads for the people of South Sudan. Additionally, Dr. Machar briefed his World Bank counterpart on the progress made thus far in implementing the peace agreement, known as the Revitalised Agreement, and emphasized the commitment of both parties to its successful execution.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Dier Tong Ngor, the country’s Minister of Finance and Planning, who assumed responsibility for the institution amidst the recent surge in prices. The devaluation of the South Sudanese pound against the US dollar prompted President Kirr to inject additional funds into the central bank, aiming to stabilize the market and restore the currency’s value.
In his remarks, the World Bank’s executive, Dr. Floribert Ngorako, expressed appreciation for the leaders’ dedication to peace implementation. He further emphasized the World Bank’s commitment to bilateral cooperation with the South Sudanese government, particularly in addressing climate change and responding to crises.
