Public schools in southern Tasmania will be closed today as teachers strike for better pay and conditions. Hundreds of teachers and staff are expected to gather to participate in the industrial action, following a recent rejection of the Tasmanian government’s pay offer by the Australian Education Union (AEU).
According to ABC News, the AEU’s Tasmania branch president, David Genford, expressed expectations of a significant turnout at the Hobart rally, building on strong participation seen in the north and north-west earlier this week. The strike was announced more than two weeks ago to help families prepare for the disruption.
The government’s latest proposal included a pay rise of 3 percent in year one, 3 percent in year two, and 2.75 percent in year three, along with various incentives. However, Genford indicated that while the offer was “getting closer,” it still contained problematic elements, including vague language regarding workforce reductions.
Teachers expressed their frustrations during the strike, highlighting the challenges they face in providing adequate education with insufficient support. Lucie Cornelius, a teacher from Bicheno Primary School, stated that the lack of resources was heartbreaking, while Prospect High School teacher Calum Hendry emphasized the need for more support staff to ensure all students receive the attention they deserve.
If an agreement is not reached by the end of March, the AEU plans to escalate its actions, potentially leading to further strikes and work bans. Education Minister Jo Palmer expressed disappointment over the rejection of the government’s offer, emphasizing her commitment to negotiating with the unions to avoid disruption for students and families.
