According to BBC News, Sri Lanka beat England by 16 runs in the second one-day international at Headingley, levelling the series and setting up a decider at The Oval. Sri Lanka made 321-6 from 50 overs before England’s chase ended at 305-9.

England were pursuing 322 and appeared well placed when Jos Buttler retired hurt after tweaking a hamstring. They needed 68 runs from 75 balls at that stage. Buttler had reached 67 and struck Sri Lanka’s spinners for five sixes, but England lost Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton before he returned to the crease.

With 27 needed from 14 balls, Buttler came back but was barely able to run. Will Jacks, who made 52, fell at the non-striker’s end, leaving England needing 19 from the final over. Buttler then holed out at deep mid-wicket as Sri Lanka secured the victory.

Tom Banton made 73 and Ben Duckett 67 in an opening stand of 143, but both were dismissed by left-arm spinner Dinuth Wellalage. Wellalage finished with 3-49, while Joe Root made 15 and Harry Brook was out for one. Sri Lanka’s seamers used reverse swing to restrict England’s lower order.

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis made 121 in the visitors’ 321-6, with Kamindu Mendis adding 54. Rehan Ahmed took 2-48 for England, while Gus Atkinson returned 2-55. The series, and the international summer, concludes on Sunday from 10:30 BST.
