Sir Keir Starmer has expressed support for the UK’s involvement in a £78bn (€90bn) European Union loan scheme aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russia. According to BBC News, Starmer believes that joining the scheme would enhance relations with the EU and create jobs in the UK.
During discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Armenia on Monday, both leaders noted that UK participation in the loan would represent a “major step forward in the UK-EU defence industrial relationship”. Starmer emphasized that the initiative would not only benefit Ukraine but also provide capabilities that could lead to job creation in the UK.
The loan, which was recently approved by EU leaders after Hungary lifted its veto, is intended to provide crucial financial support to Ukraine, with two-thirds of the funds earmarked for defense needs and the remainder for broader financial assistance. Starmer highlighted the importance of strengthening alliances in the face of current geopolitical tensions.
In addition to discussing the loan, Starmer and von der Leyen agreed to initiate talks regarding UK participation in an EU innovation fund. Starmer also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed gratitude for the UK’s support. Further UK sanctions on Russian companies are anticipated this week, aimed at disrupting military supply chains, as the UK seeks to collaborate with its allies on various security issues.
