Arabic version: عمدة سيدني تلغي حدث الانتفاضة المثير للجدل من أجل السلامة العامة
According to ABC News,
City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has canceled an event titled ‘Why it is right to say Globalise the Intifada?’. The event was scheduled to take place on Tuesday night in a council-owned building.
Moore stated that the cancellation was necessary due to heightened anxiety and division, coinciding with the week of the first hearing block of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion in Australia. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that public events do not contribute to hostility and fear within the diverse community.
The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies welcomed the decision, expressing relief that the event was canceled. They noted that the phrase ‘Globalise the Intifada’ has been recognized by a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry as a call to violence against Jewish Australians. The organization had been engaging intensively with the council to explain why the event posed a threat to public safety and could undermine social cohesion.
In her statement, Moore also criticized what she described as a persistent media campaign that oversimplifies complex issues, contributing to division in the community. She reiterated her support for peaceful assembly and freedom of speech but stressed that these rights must be balanced with public safety concerns.
