According to BBC News,

Sir Keir Starmer’s potential participation in a leadership contest is a “personal decision,” according to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Nandy emphasized that Starmer has previously demonstrated his willingness to engage in political battles. She stated, “I wouldn’t write off the prime minister,” referencing Starmer’s resilience despite recent pressures to step down.

Nandy’s comments come after a tumultuous period for the Labour Party, during which nearly 90 of his own MPs called for Starmer’s resignation and five ministers left their posts. Nandy expressed her support for Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, who is expected to run for Labour in the Makerfield by-election and might challenge for leadership if successful.

Wes Streeting, who recently resigned as health secretary, also confirmed his intention to stand in any future leadership race. Nandy affirmed that Starmer would automatically be included on the ballot if he decided to contest a leadership election, while the prime minister himself has indicated he would participate if one occurs.

Nandy, who ran against Starmer for the Labour leadership in 2020, ruled out her own candidacy. She reflected on the recent election results, indicating that constituents feel they have not seen enough assertiveness from the party. “The message is loud and clear, they want to see us on the pitch fighting harder,” she remarked, underscoring a need for the party to amplify its voice in government.

Burnham’s path to a return to Parliament has gained momentum, with Labour’s National Executive Committee recently allowing him to seek selection as the party’s candidate in Makerfield. Nandy noted the challenges ahead, given the strong performance of Reform UK in local elections in the area. However, she maintained that Burnham’s popularity as mayor could sway voters back to Labour.

As the political landscape shifts, the upcoming Makerfield by-election is seen as critical for Labour’s future. MP Josh Simons, who plans to resign to facilitate Burnham’s candidacy, stated that the contest is “existential” for the party, emphasizing the need to regain the trust of working-class voters. The Labour Party’s internal dynamics and its relationship with the European Union are expected to be significant issues in any future leadership contest.

Nandy concluded by highlighting the necessity for voices from regions like Greater Manchester to be heard more prominently at Westminster, reinforcing Labour’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its constituents.
