STOP ANNOUNCING AND START BUILDING: WENTWORTH POINT COMMUNITY NEEDS PARRAMATTA LIGHT RAIL STAGE 2

The NSW Labor Opposition is calling on the NSW Government to tell the people of Western Sydney when construction of Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 would start after the Government re-announced the project on Wednesday June 1.

This is the 14th time in 5 years that the Government has re-announced the project and construction is yet to start, even though a business case for the project has existed since 2018.

Labor has raised concerns about a lack of detail around the announcement. The Government failed to announce a prospective start date, made no commitment to local manufacturing, and has failed to announce what the total cost of the project would be.

Shadow Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said: “This isn’t a new announcement. It’s a re-announcement of a re-announcement.

“This is a project that the Government said it was going to build in 2017, committed to again at the 2019 election, tried to cancel in 2021 and have now re announced in 2022. Wentworth Point residents have been through enough. The community deserves certainty and it deserves a start date.”

Member for Auburn Lynda Voltz said: “The Government has approved thousands of new homes across this community, but it’s taken them more than five years to commit to building Wentworth Point the already promised infrastructure it deserves.

“We’ve got another commitment from the Government. It’s the 14th time they’ve announced this project but we need to see shovels in the ground soon. Otherwise a generation of people will end up growing up here without access to public transport.”
