According to Allafrica, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected unilateral U.S. sanctions announced over allegations that the Sudanese Armed Forces used chemical weapons, describing the claims as false and the measures as unlawful.

In a statement issued in Khartoum on July 20, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Sudan remains committed to relevant international agreements and will continue cooperating with specialized international organizations, particularly the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The ministry said the government had refuted the allegations when they first appeared in media reports attributed to unidentified sources. It reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention, including its treaty obligations, periodic declarations and the prohibition on producing, possessing or using chemical weapons.

Sudan also noted that it is a member of the OPCW Executive Council. The statement said the government had maintained constructive engagement with the United States to examine concerns through the technical and procedural mechanisms required to verify such allegations.

However, the ministry said Washington had not provided credible evidence and had disregarded procedures set out under the Chemical Weapons Convention before imposing sanctions. It said the measures were driven by “purely political motives” and called on the United States to follow established legal and procedural frameworks and provide the evidence it says it possesses.
