Arabic version: أمهات ساحل صن شاين يجدن الدعم في رحلات المشي بالأدغال
According to ABC News, the free Mums Who Hike group on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has been helping mothers support their mental and physical wellbeing through bushwalks for about 18 months.
Founded by former outdoor educator Sabina Kath, the group’s walks have been attended by about 700 mothers. The outings accommodate the realities of parenting, with members helping one another when children need feeding, nappy changes or supplies such as sunscreen and wipes.
Members say the walks offer connection during a period that can feel isolating. Emma Burgess said joining the group helped get her out of the house and gave her confidence to make new friends and spend time outdoors with her child.
The children have also grown more confident outside, Ms Kath said, as they walk, climb and explore together. Jess Calligan said getting outdoors provides her family with a reset and an alternative to screens.
Ms Kath shares the group’s scenic trips online, where images are often reposted by tourism pages. She was named a finalist in the volunteer category of the 2026 Outdoors Queensland Awards, with winners due to be announced on October 30. She said walking in a group can also make mothers feel more secure when hiking with children.
