Arabic version: السكك الحديدية في سوريا تكافح لتوفير الوقود وتدهور البنية التحتية
In a pivotal operation for post-war Syria, freight trains are once again transporting fuel from the Baniyas Refinery to the Aleppo Thermal Power Plant. According to Al Jazeera, this marks a significant moment for a country that has seen its rail infrastructure severely damaged by war.
The Baniyas Refinery, Syria’s largest oil-refining facility, has become one of the last functioning components of the nation’s fuel network. Workers at the refinery and rail staff play a crucial role in maintaining energy supplies, with operations ramping up since the regime’s fall in December 2024. Hussam Hassan, who oversees train-filling operations, noted that on busy days, two or three trains depart for destinations like Homs and Aleppo, highlighting the importance of rail transport in the energy sector.
However, the journey is fraught with challenges. Nidal Abdulkader, director of Syrian Railways operations in Tartous, lamented the state of the rail system, which has suffered extensive damage and looting during the civil war. The once-direct route to Aleppo has been rendered unusable, requiring freight trains to take a longer detour. Abdulkader emphasized the need for modernization, as much of the rolling stock and infrastructure is outdated and in disrepair.
Despite these obstacles, the crew of locomotive number 708 prepared for the journey. The three-man team, sharing a cramped cab, reflects the resilience of those working to restore functionality to the rail system. They are motivated by the necessity of their work, which they view as crucial for the country’s recovery. As they embark on their journey, they remain hopeful that the railways can one day regain their former glory, connecting cities and communities once more.
