According to ABC News, Taiwanese woman Yang Jinping has been sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison for the attempted murder of Brisbane exchange student Alex Shorey.

Taiwan state media reported that Yang was convicted of attempted murder in the Taipei District Court. She had befriended Mr Shorey while he was studying a Chinese literature program in Taiwan in early 2023. The pair began an on-again, off-again relationship.

Prosecutors alleged Yang poisoned Mr Shorey with the rat poison superwarfarin after he said he wanted to shorten his time in Taiwan. They said she continued mixing the poison into his food and drinks, including while he was in hospital.

Mr Shorey, a University of Queensland student on exchange at Tamkang University in Taipei, was admitted to hospital several times in 2023. He was treated in Taipei before being medically evacuated to Australia. His family crowd-sourced more than $200,000 for the evacuation.

During the case, Mr Shorey’s mother told the court she found an empty bottle of rat poison in his rental apartment in Taiwan. Yang was charged with attempted murder in late 2024. Mr Shorey’s father, Stephen Shorey, previously said his son had recovered and that the 2023 retrieval had “saved his life.”
