According to The Guardian, Tame Impala’s Deadbeat tour has arrived in Australia after starting in the US almost a year ago, opening with a Brisbane Entertainment Centre show on Friday night. The 12-date arena run is set to conclude in Perth, Kevin Parker’s home town.

The review describes an eye-catching production built around an extensive lighting and laser rig, confetti cannons and camera-led staging. Parker’s onstage manner was deliberately lackadaisical, while his ethereal, plaintive voice rose above abrasive guitars and synthesised sounds. The band was joined by James Ireland of Pond fame, and drummer Julien Barbagallo was singled out for his powerful playing.

Parker told the Brisbane audience that performing the shows and songs back home was special to him. Ninajirachi supported the Australian dates with frenetic, glitchy EDM, providing a sharp contrast to the more melancholic material from Deadbeat.

The Guardian found that newer songs such as “Loser”, “My Old Ways” and “Dracula” worked strongly in the live setting, while “Piece of Heaven”, “No Reply” and “Obsolete” were more muted. Earlier tracks including “Elephant” and “Let It Happen” took on a darker industrial tone, although the review noted frequent shifts between subdued and euphoric moods.

The two-hour show closed with the seven-minute acid house track “End of Summer”, following “Dracula”. The tour continues in Brisbane until 11 October, then visits Melbourne from 14-17 October, Sydney from 19-21 October and Perth from 24-25 October.
