According to ABC News, a woman died and two people were left in critical condition after a two-vehicle head-on crash at Old Beach, north of Hobart, on Monday, marking Tasmania’s fourth road fatality within a week.

Emergency services were called to the East Derwent Highway near Riviera Drive at about 1:30pm, Tasmania Police said. A blue Nissan and a silver Great Wall had collided, and the female front-seat passenger of the Nissan was declared dead at the scene.

The Nissan’s female driver and the Great Wall’s male driver were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where both remained in a critical condition. The highway was closed between Riviera Drive and Jetty Road while investigators examined the scene.

Acting Inspector Amanda Hall urged motorists to take care whenever they travel. “Every death on our roads is one too many, and today further families have received the devastating news that their loved one has died or been critically injured in a crash,” she said.

The death followed a Bass Highway collision north of Elizabeth Town on Friday in which three people died and two others sustained “substantial injuries”. Tasmania’s road toll for the year has reached 25, compared with 30 at the same time last year. Police are seeking dashcam footage of the vehicles before the Old Beach crash; investigations into both collisions continue and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
