According to ABC News, a 16-year-old boy has been charged with murdering his 35-year-old mother and attempting to unlawfully kill his 12-year-old sister after an alleged stabbing at the family home in Bentley, in Perth’s south-east.

Police found the woman’s body at a house on Mills Street about 6:15am on Tuesday. A second crime scene was established after the injured girl was found on Albany Highway in Cannington, about 600 metres from the home. Police said the girl escaped the residence and called police after she was also allegedly stabbed by her brother.

The girl remains in hospital with serious injuries. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said she had a number of stab wounds and was being cared for in hospital while surrounded by family. The boy was arrested at the home and is due to face Perth Children’s Court on Wednesday.

WA Police Detective Acting Inspector Jessica Securo said investigators were treating the matter as a suspected family violence homicide, with the homicide squad leading the investigation. She said police would examine any past interactions the family had with police. Commissioner Blanch described the boy as known to police.

Speaking generally, Mr Blanch said adolescent violence in the family home had increased in Western Australia and that violence by children against parents was significantly under-reported. Premier Roger Cook called the incident deeply distressing and said thoughts should be with those affected, including family, friends, the community and first responders.
