A 19-year-old man has been charged over a bomb hoax that led to the evacuation of a show by comedian Peter Kay in Birmingham. Omar Majed, of Washwood Heath, Birmingham, has been charged with false communications and will appear before magistrates in the city on Monday, West Midlands Police said.
The incident occurred during Kay’s show at the Utilita Arena on Friday night, when a report of a suspicious bag led to the evacuation of the venue. Kay was about 45 minutes into his set when it was cut short. Following searches, nothing suspicious was found.
West Midlands Police expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation during the evacuation, emphasizing that public safety remains their top priority. A spokesperson for the NEC Group announced that ticket holders would be informed of the next steps through the original ticketing outlet.
The Utilita Arena Birmingham also provided an update on social media, thanking attendees for their understanding during the emergency. They confirmed that the scheduled show for Saturday would proceed as planned, along with details about the security measures in place to ensure safety.
