According to ABC News, a 17-year-old has been sentenced to two years and nine months in youth detention for his role in a violent home invasion in Kew East, Melbourne, that left Kai Li with 11 stab wounds and traumatised his family.

The aggravated home invasion occurred in Oxford Street in August 2025. Just before 4am, intruders jumped a fence and used garden shears to smash a downstairs window. Mr Li then confronted five masked people, some armed with machetes, while trying to protect his wife, two children, grandparents and a nanny.

Mr Li’s wife and grandparents were assaulted. He sustained stab wounds to his face and upper body, suffered permanent damage to his eyesight, and the intruders allegedly stole the family car before fleeing. The teenager pleaded guilty to aggravated home invasion, assault charges and other car theft offences.

Judge Jack Vandersteen called the invasion a “grave violation” after considering police material, Mr Li’s victim impact statement and baby-monitor footage. “The screams, the threats, are evident. The fear of the occupants was palpable,” the judge said, adding that a home should be a place of safety.

Prosecutors did not allege the teenager directly caused Mr Li’s injuries, but said he was part of the broader plot. The court heard he had taken drugs and alcohol before the attack, had written an apology letter and had support from family and his church community. Two other people charged over the break-in remain before the courts, while police are seeking two more people.
