A teenager from Gagebrook, Tasmania, has successfully campaigned for the reinstatement of a Friday bus service after enduring a challenging two-year journey. Jack Triffitt, 13, has been advocating for the 530 Metro bus to operate five days a week to help students reach school without having to navigate difficult terrain.

According to ABC News, Jack’s weekly trek included traversing a swamp, steep hills, and a lengthy dirt road, which made his Friday commute particularly arduous. Previously, the bus service did not operate early enough for Jack to arrive at school on time, forcing him and other students to find alternative transportation.

Jack’s relentless efforts included working with the Brighton Youth Action Group for two years, lobbying government officials, and communicating with transport authorities. His dedication paid off when the state government agreed to reinstate the Friday bus service, much to the delight of Jack and his schoolmates.

Transport Minister Kerry Vincent acknowledged Jack’s advocacy, stating that the government had prioritized the issue and worked to restore the service. However, while this victory marks a significant improvement for Jack, broader public transport challenges remain in the Brighton area.

Local council officials highlighted ongoing issues with inadequate public transport options, particularly concerning connectivity between suburbs. Brighton Council community development manager Angela Turvey emphasized that this is just a small part of the issues for the community when it comes to public transport. The council is actively seeking to enhance transport services, with plans to trial bus routes that improve access within the community. Council representatives emphasize the importance of addressing these transport gaps to support the growing population and improve residents’ quality of life.
