According to BBC News, Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada is resigning after the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike. Governor Bill Lee announced the change on Saturday in a joint statement with Strada.

Strada said stepping down was “in the best interests” of the state and described the ongoing investigation as “entirely appropriate and necessary”. Lee said Strada had served with integrity and had put the interests of Tennesseans first during a difficult moment.

Pike, sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, survived two injections of pentobarbital on Wednesday. She is in critical condition at a Tennessee hospital, while her lawyers seek to commute her sentence. Legal filings said doctors in Nashville were attempting to clear the execution drugs from her body.

Her lawyers said Pike could be heard crying, whimpering and breathing loudly during the procedure. As of Thursday night, they said, she was unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator. The Department of Correction defended its method, saying the protocol did not allow additional procedures beyond those carried out.

Lee has ordered an independent review and halted all executions in Tennessee for the year. Authorities have not said whether they will again seek to execute Pike or explained what went wrong. Her lawyers filed an emergency motion on Friday seeking to preserve evidence related to the failed execution.

Pike’s legal team called Strada’s resignation justified but said it did not help her. The lawyers said the incident reflected a systemic failure extending beyond one person and urged a full independent review of Tennessee’s death penalty system.
