Terella Brewing will close its doors next month after a legal stoush with Sunshine Coast Council. The brewery, which opened in 2019, has been embroiled in a prolonged battle over planning and land-use approvals. According to ABC News, more than 40 employees will lose their jobs as a result of this closure.
The conflict escalated after a noise and traffic complaint was lodged by a neighbour in 2023, four years after Terella began its operations. Following this, the brewery applied for a material change of use in late 2024, but was issued an enforcement notice by the council last year, prompting Terella to appeal in the Planning and Environment Court.
After more than 12 months of working through the development application process and spending more than $169,000 in fees, Terella Brewing withdrew its planning request last week. In a letter to the council dated February 17, the brewery expressed its intention to continue working with the council to ensure that their operations are conducted within the originally approved rural industry (brewery) use.
On Thursday night, the brewery’s owners announced the closure via social media, highlighting the ongoing financial and legal pressures they faced. They criticized the council for the lengthy struggle, stating, “For years we have fought to keep the doors open… the council has finally broken us.”
Sunshine Coast Council chief executive John Baker countered that the issues stemmed from Terella not having the proper approvals. He emphasized the importance of compliance for the safety and fairness of the community. Terella’s owner, Brandt Bamford, disputed these claims, stating that the brewery had adhered to necessary regulations and expressed frustration over the council’s stance.
With Terella Brewing’s closure, it becomes the third major venue to shut down on the Sunshine Coast this year, following The Station in January and the impending closure of Solbar in Maroochydore.
