According to ABC News,
Hundreds ran in honour of former Australian of the Year, Richard Scolyer, on Saturday morning. Nearly 500 participants took part in the event, reflecting on Scolyer’s significant contributions to both the running community and cancer research.
Posters of Scolyer were hung around Richard Murdern Reserve in Haberfield, where speeches were read to commemorate his impact. Scolyer was a beloved figure known for his passion for running, having completed 250 parkruns in total, both in Australia and abroad. His brother, Mark Scolyer, described the day as emotional, highlighting the camaraderie and kindness that characterized Richard’s approach to running.
Emily Hamilton, the acting group run director, emphasized Scolyer’s embodiment of the Greenway parkrun spirit, noting his encouragement for others to participate and enjoy the experience. Participants recounted their memories of Scolyer, including the milestone of his 250th parkrun achieved almost a year prior to his passing.
Scolyer’s dedication extended beyond running; he was a renowned pathologist and melanoma researcher who became a pioneer in brain cancer research. He volunteered as “patient zero” for an experimental immunotherapy treatment, contributing valuable insights to the future of brain cancer therapies. In 2024, he was a co-recipient of the Australian of the Year award for his groundbreaking work in melanoma research.
The Greenway Parkrun event served as a fitting tribute to a man who not only inspired many through his athletic endeavors but also left a lasting legacy in the field of medical research.
