Do motorists like speed cameras?

That’s the burning question Transport NSW is spending a whopping $156,200 to find out in a contract just awarded to a global consulting firm.

The contract “to ascertain [drivers’] level of satisfaction with enforcement cameras” started in April and is due to run for a year, including the period of the 2023 NSW state election.

NSW Shadow Minister for Roads John Graham said:

“This is a monumental waste.”

“This is money robbed from road safety and put into polling.”

“We want money spent on black spots, not on focus groups.”

“Rather than spend this money on polling, the Minister should spend ten minutes on talkback radio to find out what the public thinks of these covert cameras.”

NSW Shadow Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said:

“They say there are no stupid questions but Transport NSW is giving it a go.”

“I have had plenty of feedback about these cameras.”

“In my experience the drivers of NSW will give their opinions on this government’s endless revenue raising for free.”
