According to France 24, thousands of people have started returning to Morocco after a mass crossing into Spain’s exclave of Ceuta. Spanish authorities said at least 34 people died while attempting to reach the territory from Morocco.

Officials said around 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta by land and sea over the past 24 hours. More than 37,500 had subsequently returned to Morocco, according to the report.

Spanish officials are seeking a declaration of a national emergency following the arrivals. It remains unclear what triggered the influx, though Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez blamed criminal networks.
