Arabic version: العثور على ثلاث شابات ميتات في بحر برايتون
The bodies of three young women have been recovered from the sea off the coast of Brighton. According to BBC News, Sussex Police said a search was launched after concerns were raised for the welfare of a person in the sea at 05:45 BST on Wednesday.
Emergency teams were first called to a report of a single person in the water near Black Rocks car park on Madeira Drive. Upon arrival, two more bodies were recovered from the sea nearby. The women, understood to be about 20 to 30 years old, were first spotted at Brighton Palace Pier before drifting to the marina.
Ch Supt Adam Hays described the situation as a tragic incident, emphasizing that the investigation is in its early stages. He expressed the importance of identifying the women and notifying their families, who at this point remain unaware they have lost loved ones. Hays urged the public to refrain from speculation as inquiries continue.
Local residents expressed shock over the event. Jilly Francis, a regular sea swimmer, noted the rough conditions on the day of the incident, suggesting that it would be unusual for experienced swimmers to enter the water. Brighton Kemptown MP Chris Ward conveyed concern for the community, while Brighton & Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey extended condolences to the victims’ families.
The beach at Black Rock has since reopened, and while most emergency services have departed, Sussex Police continue to investigate several lines of inquiry regarding how the women ended up in the water. Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne called the event “awful” and reiterated the need for patience as authorities work through the details of this sensitive case.
