British cyclist Tom Pidcock is out of the Volta a Catalunya after crashing during the fifth stage of the race. The incident occurred when Pidcock misjudged a corner, leading him off the road and into a ravine, an event he described as a “horror” fall.

Despite the crash, the 26-year-old rider managed to finish the stage, albeit over 29 minutes behind the stage winner, Jonas Vingegaard. Following medical evaluations, Pidcock was deemed unfit to continue in the competition due to injuries likely affecting his right knee and wrist.

“Due to his crash he suffered injuries, most likely bone and ligament damage in particular to his right knee and also right wrist,” stated team doctor Lorenz Emmert. The decision to withdraw Pidcock was made after assessing the severity of his injuries.

Pidcock, who recently won the Milano-Torino race and narrowly lost the Milan-San Remo to world champion Tadej Pogacar, expressed disappointment at not being able to continue. “We did everything to try to make it to the start [of Saturday’s stage six] but it’s not possible,” he said. He emphasized his commitment to recovery, stating, “Now the focus is on recovery, and I’ll be back.” According to BBC News, further clinical evaluations and imaging will follow in the coming days.
