Arabic version: توتنهام يؤمن ماتيوس فرنانديز مقابل 85 مليون جنيه إسترليني من وست هام
Tottenham Hotspur has finalized an £85m deal to acquire Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The agreement was reached without any add-ons, marking a significant investment in the young player.
According to BBC News, Tottenham faced competition from Manchester United, who opted not to match the fee proposed by Spurs. The 21-year-old Fernandes emerged as a key target after Tottenham’s attempt to sign Sandro Tonali for £80m was rejected by Newcastle United.
This summer, Tottenham has been active in the transfer market, having already signed four players. Recently, they reached an agreement to bring goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer once his contract with Burnley expires on 1 July. The club has also secured defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers, along with Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m from Brighton.
Despite facing relegation in back-to-back Premier League seasons, Fernandes attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United decided to withdraw from the race, sticking to their strategy of only pursuing players they believe are valued appropriately. Their focus remains on strengthening their central midfield, having already agreed to a £35m deal for Ederson from Atalanta, although the transfer is currently delayed due to his late call-up for the Brazil World Cup squad.
