According to ABC News, Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto has been fined $1,036 and issued an infringement notice for disorderly behaviour near a licensed premises following an altercation at a Magnetic Island bar in June. Police said their investigation into the matter has been finalised and no charges have been laid.
The investigation concerned an alleged assault at a venue in Nelly Bay on June 7 involving Cr Dametto and a 28-year-old staffer for LNP member for Townsville Adam Baillie. Cr Dametto had been on the island for a pub crawl facilitated by a local tourism operator. Mr Baillie was never accused of wrongdoing.
Cr Dametto initially declined media requests after the incident, before speaking more than a week later. He described the matter as “over-inflated” and said he did not expect charges or “anything of the sort” to be laid.
The mayor said when he first addressed the event that he “absolutely” expected to retain a constructive working relationship with Mr Baillie. Cr Dametto, a former Katter’s Australia Party MP, resigned from state parliament and the party before running for mayor in November 2025. The ABC said it had contacted him for comment.
