Arabic version: الخزانة تحدد سعر سندات السلسلة I عند 5.51%
According to Cnbc, newly purchased Series I bonds will pay 5.51% annual interest from Nov. 1 through April 30, 2027, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced. The rate is higher than the 4.26% yield offered on purchases made through Oct. 31.
The new composite rate includes a 4.08% variable portion based on inflation data and a 1.40% fixed portion. The fixed rate rose from 0.90% announced in April and is the highest since 2006. The Treasury said the combined rate is 5.51% after rounding.
I bond rates consist of variable and fixed components that the Treasury adjusts every six months, in May and November. The variable rate is tied to the consumer price index change over six months and remains in effect for six months after purchase. The fixed rate does not change for the life of the bond.
Existing I bond holders will see variable-rate changes on a six-month schedule based on their original purchase date, while retaining their original fixed rate. Interest can be earned for up to 30 years. Investors cannot redeem I bonds during the first year, and those who redeem within five years lose the previous three months of interest.
The consumer price index rose 3.7% in September 2026 from a year earlier, compared with an annual pace of 3.4% in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. David Enna, founder of Tipswatch.com, said, “I bonds are a lot more attractive at this point.”
