U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized his preference for resolving tensions with Iran through diplomacy during his recent State of the Union address. He expressed concerns over Iran’s alleged ambitions to develop missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland and accused Tehran of attempting to rebuild its nuclear program, which he claimed had been previously dismantled by U.S. strikes.

In his address, Trump stated, “We wiped it out and they want to start all over again.” He asserted that Iran is pursuing what he termed “sinister ambitions” and indicated that while negotiations were ongoing, a definitive agreement to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons had not yet been reached. According to Al Jazeera, Trump reiterated his stance, saying, “I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror to have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump’s remarks follow a significant military buildup by the U.S. in the Middle East and precede a third round of indirect negotiations set to take place in Geneva. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed optimism, asserting that a deal to avert conflict is “within reach” and stressing Iran’s commitment to not developing nuclear weapons while also seeking the benefits of peaceful nuclear technology.

The upcoming talks are seen as a critical opportunity for both nations to come to an agreement, with Araghchi emphasizing the need for diplomacy to take precedence in resolving the ongoing tensions.
