According to Cnbc, President Donald Trump and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping are expected to meet at the White House on Thursday for high-stakes talks on trade, artificial intelligence and the Iran war. The summit is also expected to include military fanfare and a state dinner.
Xi arrived Wednesday evening at Maryland’s Joint Base Andrews, where Trump greeted him on the tarmac after walking down a red carpet laid out by U.S. service members. A source familiar with the president’s plans told CNBC that it was Trump’s first time traveling to the base to welcome a foreign leader. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.
On Thursday morning, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are set to welcome Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan for an arrival ceremony on the White House State Floor. The leaders are then scheduled to go to the Rose Garden for a military review before holding a bilateral meeting. Melania Trump and Madame Peng are expected to attend a separate event.
China analysts broadly predict a cautious summit with few major deliverables, despite the geopolitical risks surrounding the leaders’ latest face-to-face meeting. On Thursday evening, Trump and the first lady are set to host the Chinese delegation for a state dinner in the East Room, where both countries’ leaders are expected to give remarks. U.S. business executives are slated to attend.
On Friday, the presidents and first ladies are scheduled to hold a private tea at the White House and tour the National Archives before Xi departs. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump was reciprocating Xi’s hospitality after Xi hosted Trump in China for a summit this summer.
